The Atacama Desert

San Pedro de Atacama is a pretty oasis town that provides the perfect base to explore some of Chile’s best desert scenery and adventure pursuits. It has a wealth of comfortable lodging and quality dining to rest up after touring the rugged salt flats region or after a land crossing from nearby Bolivia.

HighlivesPrice: From £1500 per person

The town pre-dates the Spanish conquerors and retains a stronger sense of this history than many other places in Chile. Its isolated location and clear, dry atmosphere provides wonderful views of the night sky and stunning sunsets, and the salt plains, lunar landscapes and bubbling geysers are close by.

  • Day 1: Arrive at San Pedro de Atacama
Flight from Santiago – Calama or transfer from Bolivian border.
  • Day 2: Half day Moon Valley & Death Valley
Pick up at hotel in the afternoon to enjoy a spectacular sunset in the Moon Valley. Leave San Pedro towards Calama, stopping on the way for a photo opportunity to take some great pictures of the Andean mountain range, the huge Atacama salt lake, the active volcano Lascar and the impressive Licancabur volcano behind the small oasis of San Pedro de Atacama. Your journey continues to the Moon Valley of spectacular rock formations formed over thousands of years of erosion due to climate effects such as the caverns and salt figures “Tres Marias”. Enjoy an optional short hike to one of the giant sand dunes. Return to hotel in San Pedro around 20:00.
  • Day 3: Half day Toconao & Salar de Atacama & Laguna Chaxa
Pick up at hotel to visit the huge salt lake Salar de Atacama. A visit to Toconao, a village where the locals manufacture white volcanic stone sculptures and the houses are built from the stone. Continuing to the largest salt lake in Chile: Salar de Atacama. It is an inland sea formed millions of years ago into a vast plain of octagonal shaped salt crusts in the middle of the driest desert on earth. It is also home to various species of flamingos as well as many other birds. In the afternoon return to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.
